Travelers Championship predictions, odds 2020: Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia picks from PGA insider

The PGA Tour is getting used to its new normal as the revamped schedule heads into its third week, but the pandemic-inflicted break has meant elite fields at recent tournaments. Four of the top five golfers in the world will be playing for the third week in a row when the 2020 Travelers Championship gets started Thursday at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn. Three-time winner and defending champion Bubba Watson returns, and the left-hander is listed at 33-1 in William Hill’s latest 2020 Travelers Championship 2020 golf odds.

Webb Simpson, last week’s winner at the RBC Heritage, also is in the 2020 Travelers Championship field, and he is listed at 20-1. World No. 1 Rory McIlroy is the Vegas favorite at 12-1. Before making any 2020 Travelers Championship picks, you need to check out the latest PGA Tour predictions from SportsLine’s resident golf insider, Sal Johnson

A media legend and consummate golf insider, Johnson absolutely nailed the Travelers Championship last year. Johnson promoted 50-1 long shot Chez Reavie as a potential winner, noting his game was a perfect fit for TPC River Highlands. The result: Reavie cruised to a four-stroke victory, finishing 17-under for his first PGA title in 11 years.

It was part of Johnson’s banner 2019 season. He featured Tiger Woods in his best bets for the Masters, and Woods walked away with his fifth green jacket. Then, Johnson promoted Brooks Koepka in his PGA Championship best bets, and Koepka made a mockery of that tournament, building a seven-shot lead entering the weekend and rolling to victory.

Johnson completely called the season-ending Tour Championship. He predicted Koepka, Rory McIlroy or Xander Schauffele would win, and those were the top three finishers. Anyone who followed Johnson’s golf picks saw huge returns.

Now, Johnson, the first producer of “Inside the PGA Tour,” a longtime ABC Sports golf producer who has worked with Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Greg Norman, and the founder of the world’s top golf statistics database, has released his highly confident 2020 picks here, and they will surprise you.

Top 2020 Travelers Championship expert picks

One surprise: Johnson is fading McIlroy, even though the Northern Irishman has been posting strong stats all season and is the top Vegas favorite. He had finished in the top 10 in all six events before finishing outside the top 25 the past two weeks. The 31-year-old’s final-round issues and his struggles in this event are unlikely to end this week, so he is a golfer you want avoid.

Johnson has been watching the up-and-down performance of Sergio Garcia, who was the runner-up at this event in 2014. The Spaniard tied for fifth at last week’s RBC Heritage, shooting 65 in the final three rounds after opening with a 70. He missed the cut the previous week, going one-under after shooting 70-69. He is third on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee and fifth in strokes gained tee to green. He has 35 international victories, including the 2017 Masters.

The golf stats expert also has been keeping a close eye on Dustin Johnson to see if he is ready to break through. The big man also is having a roller-coaster season, missing the cut at the Charles Schwab before tying for 17th at last week’s RBC Heritage. He shot in the 60s in all four rounds at Harbour Town, and the TPC River Highlands course rewards big hitters. He is 21st in driving distance and 17th in strokes gained off the tee this season.

How to make 2020 Travelers Championship predictions

Johnson is all over an international player this week who has just one PGA Tour win and is fetching 50-1 or higher. This overlooked youngster has a strong record at TPC River Highlands and, based on his recent surge, “could be peaking this week,” Johnson said.
