Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. odds, date: WBC Frontline Championship picks, predictions from boxing expert

There was a point in the early 2000s where Roy Jones Jr. was the light heavyweight champion and Mike Tyson was making another heavyweight championship push. A Tyson vs. Jones superfight would have been one of the biggest pay-per-view events in boxing history at that time. However, Tyson was knocked out by Lennox Lewis in 2002 and then was out of the business by 2005 and the bout never came to fruition. But fast forward to 2020 and the legends will finally step into the ring on Saturday at the Staples Center with the WBC Frontline Battle Belt on the line.

Tyson and Jones will headline a card that begins at 10 p.m. ET in an eight-round exhibition that will be scored by the WBC instead of the California State Athletic Commission. They’ll use bigger 12 oz. gloves in a fight that will be stopped if either fighter is cut. Both men are in their 50s now and Tyson hasn’t been in a ring in 15 years, while Jones fought in 2018, but Tyson is still the -220 favorite (bet $220 to win $100) over Jones (+180) in the Tyson vs. Jones odds from SportsLine. Before locking in any Tyson vs. Jones picks, see the latest boxing predictions from SportsLine analyst Peter Kahn.

A 2019 Boxing Writers Association of America Cus D’Amato Manager of the Year nominee, Kahn has his finger on the pulse of what’s going on inside and outside the ring. Kahn has managed numerous world champions and currently manages 17 fighters through his company, Fight Game Advisors. He can be seen and heard weekly as co-host of “The Fight Guys” on YouTube.

Kahn is uncanny when it comes to picking fights. He is an astounding 26-2 on SportsLine boxing picks since the hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, returning $2,310 to $100 bettors.

In October, Kahn called one of the year’s biggest upsets, predicting Teofimo Lopez would stun Vasiliy Lomachenko to become the unified lightweight champ. The result? Lopez outhit the pound-for-pound king from the first bell, winning convincingly for a monster payout. Anyone who followed Kahn’s advice won $350 for every $100 risked.

Now, with Saturday’s pay-per-view showdown fast approaching, Kahn has studied Tyson vs. Jones from every angle, identified the best value in the boxing odds and released highly confident picks. Head to SportsLine to see all of his boxing picks.

Tyson vs. Jones preview

Tyson is in the conversation for greatest heavyweight of all-time and Jones is a four-division champion who is still the only fighter to win titles from middleweight all the way to heavyweight. Seeing the two square off, even with Tyson at 54 and Jones at 51, should be interesting. But beyond being a spectacle, many fight fans have been surprised by how great of shape Tyson appears to be in. Jones, meanwhile, won 12 prize fights in the final decade of his career.

Even with CSAC executive director Andy Foster insisting that the fighters display their skills without true intent to injure and cuts stopping the fight, there won’t be any headgear and it’s tough to put two legends in the ring without the intensity ratcheting up to an extent.

Tyson finished his career at 50-6 overall and won 44 times by way of knockout so his power comes naturally and fans are still eager to see what he has left in the tank. Meanwhile, Jones was 66-9 during his professional career, and even though his career took a turn after he lost the final two bouts in the trilogy with Antonio Tarver, he carved out a role for himself in the business in his 40s and won 12 of his last 13 professional fights.
