Charles Schwab Challenge Round 1: How Did The Course Play
(3:23)

With the coronavirus pandemic still sweeping the nation and most of the globe, the PGA Tour has found a way to bring golf back with as many safety precautions as possible. This week’s Charles Schwab Challenge marks the first PGA Tour event in three months, the unintended benefit of which is an unbelievable field at a tremendous course for a sports-starved country to consume continuing Friday morning.

Colonial Country Club has always been one of the best — and one of my favorite — courses on the PGA Tour, and this week it has the field to prove it. Of the top 20 players in the world, only four will be absent this week, and all five of the top five in the world are playing. We should get a leaderboard packed with big-time names and some of the best players in the world.

Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy are both making their first appearances at this tournament, while Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm have both nearly won here before. They are among the innumerable storylines this weekend as the tournament expands its field from 120 players to 148 amid the pandemic. Thomas opened T3 after the first round with Justin Rose and Harold Varner III in the lead.

It’s been a strange year in golf, and maybe it will continue to be that way, especially with no fans at the first few events. But at least for a bit this week at Colonial, everything will feel familiar as the best players on the planet get their tee shots in the air and we get back to playing professional golf. Check out how CBS will be handling the weekend coverage of the Charles Schwab Challenge.
